As grief for the life not lived passes,
and momentarily tempts her to stay, he misunderstands
her ambivalence and thinks she never meant
any of the many words. But she hasn’t been honest.
She hasn’t told the truth. He asked her, accused her of
lying, and he was right to. But his assumed conclusions
are far from where she stands.
Her reasons, he would have denied her, and tried to make it
better and persuaded her to stay.
She wants to be persuaded, and this is why she has lied.
