Adam Green's Five Things.

Five Things is a series of short journal posts introducing each of the writers and artists involved in our up-coming Time project.

Since the project's inception, the idea has been to create an environment where independent writers and artists could come together in order to share their work. The result of this endeavour is a collection of stories, images and poems based around the theme of time, its pages placing particular focus upon the relationship between words and pictures. By sharing in this way we hope to inspire each other as well as those around us, to draw a diverse audience and so help to illuminate the work of alternative artists and writers everywhere.


Biography.

Adam Green is a writer and musician from London. His debut novel Satsuma Sun-mover, which includes illustrations by Carl Laurence, was published by Lazy Gramophone Press and long-listed for the Dylan Thomas Prize for Young Writers. His band Blue Swerver released its first album, The Art of Collapsing, on Modify the Van Records in 2008. He sporadically performs spoken word renditions of his prose in various subterranean locales.



Five Things that have Inspired my Writing.

Herzog - Saul Bellow's curious novel whose protagonist seemed to combine aimless agitation and great moments of clarity all at once. Premised on a series of long letters to all and sundry - including the famous dead - it showed me the virtue of the slightly bedraggled, professorial middle aged man, struggling to meet his daily duties and forever engaged in abstract plans and plots. Not only is it ok to stand around in a loosely tied dressing gown nursing a coffee. It's better if you do.

Rhythm of the Saints - Paul Simon's beautiful album, much subtler than Graceland and others of the period. His lyrics wind around the music so carefully. Who the hell else writes lyrics like this?:
"Down among the reeds and rushes, a baby child was born. His eyes as clear as centuries. His silky hair was brown. Never been lonely. Never been lied to. Never had the scuffling fear. Nothing denied to. Born at the instant. Church bells chiming. The whole world listening. Born at the right time".

How to be Idle - A humorous jaunt through literary and cultural history, from Proust and Wilde to opium dens and fishing manuals, all focused on the importance of idleness. In the modern day - over-stimulated as we are, addicted to phones and tablets and sweaty with our packed schedule - this was really refreshing to my workaholic self. I think total down time (i.e. collapsed on a sofa doing nothing, rather than vaguely engaged downtime, such as watching television) is inherently linked to greater creativity etc.

On the Road - I think that reading Kerouac's book now, it's a bit corny; but I can't disown it completely. Reading this aged 17 gave me a great hunger for adventure which led me travelling for two years, the result of which was my first book, Satsuma Sun-mover (which is also corny when I read it now, though it has its rough-edged charms).

Jitterbug Perfume - Tom Robbin's depressingly brilliant novel, his peak I think, bringing together surreal comedy, Eastern philosophy, sex and travel in one endlessly chortle-inducing tome. I didn't write anything for a year after reading this because I thought there was no point. But later I realised that, below Tom Robbins, there's still some room for the rest of us. And below them, maybe there is room for me.
